Little girl, getting bigger

Josie had her one-year old doctor's appointment this a.m. She weighed in at 24 pounds, putting her in the 90th percentile for weight. Her height lags a bit, coming in at only the 75th percentile (she is a round little girl), but her head size is creeping back up and hit the 90th percentile.

She received a shot to each chubby thigh, plus a TB test under the skin of her forearm. As it was past time for a nap anyway, we forewent the blood draw for a lead screen, but will try to get that done in the next few days. When I checked in a lunchtime, Josie was napping soundly.

Hitting the ground running

Madeleine, Josephine, and their parents enjoyed a great visit from their California grandparents last week. Madeleine loved chatting with both, and especially liked getting to go on special outtings with her grandparents on two days. On the last warm day in recent memory, the threesome ventured to the zoo. After getting caught in some terrible traffic on the way there, they made it home via backroads using their combined knowledge of Rock Creek park.

Josephine used her week to smile and play peek-a-boo with her grandparents and step up her walking, so to speak. They day before they arrived, Josephine suddenly switched from being primarily a crawler, to primarily a walker. After spending a few weeks taking steps when convenient, she'd apparently had enough and was suddenly quite ambulatory. She still sneaks up on us as we're accustomed to listening for the slap of her hands on the floor. Last week, she was still working on getting back to the standing position after taking a tumble - she needed a vertical surface to get back up. As of Monday, she figured that out too. She now uses her hands to steady herself as she gets her feet under her, and then slowly rises to a standing position.

Both girls enjoyed Easter although it wasn't what anyone had pictured. Saturday morning, we awoke to see a nice snow coating everything. Madeleine and Josephine's grandfather gamely helped hide eggs in the playground for the neighborhood egg hunt, and we all withstood the snow and cold winds to take part in the event. On Easter morning, we had another egg hunt with Madeleine's friend Drew's family, as is our tradition. The 'big' kids (4 and 5) had a great time on their egg hunt. The little kids had a good time too. Although there was no real hunting for eggs, Josephine did happen upon one on her way to sit in the toy car and picked it up.
